Photograph of the preserved original: Lamassu of the palace of Sargon II at Dur-Sharrukin. The monument includes modern restorations.
Daderot · Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures Museum, Chicago · Inventory: A7369 (OIM / ISACM) · CC0 1.0
History and context From the front, the guardian seems to stand firm; from the side, its legs draw an advance. The sculptor gave him five to resolve both points of view. Its bull body, wings and human head do not reproduce a real animal, but rather a composite protective being.
The figure, more than four meters tall, was part of a couple next to an access to the throne room. It corresponds to the palace of Sargon II of Assyria, not to Sargon of Akkad who lived more than a millennium before.
Evidence and interpretation Original Neo-Assyrian fragmented and restored. Its current museographic appearance includes the union of pieces and modern additions; It is not a sculpture moved intact.

Two texts about the same guardian A twenty-two line text on the achievements of Sargon II and his new capital is preserved in full on the back. Of the front text there remain about fifty lines distributed between the bull's legs. The file suggests that it could have started on another slab, because the introduction known in other versions is missing. Comparing inscriptions thus helps to recognize an absence: what today seems like the beginning of a text may not have been originally.
