History and context Soldiers, captives and divine figures occupy the fragments of a stele commemorating Eannatum, ruler of Lagash. The image and inscription present his victory against Umma. We do not listen to both sides: we preserve the version that Lagash wanted to make lasting.
The fragments were found and reunited at different times. When you look at them, the gaps are as important as what is preserved: they do not authorize us to complete each episode as if we had a film of the battle.
Evidence and interpretation Fragmentary memorial with Sumerian inscription. The modern casts AO 30291 and AO 30292 are not the original fragments documented here.

Seven fragments, several trajectories The catalog brings together seven fragments under various inventories. One keeps the ruler on foot before the troops; another shows him on a chariot and presents captives caught in a net on the opposite side. The AO fragment 16109, given by the British Museum in 1933, links parts of the composition. These joints do not invent missing scenes: they relate surfaces that are actually preserved and allow us to distinguish the material unions from the reconstructions drawn to explain the whole.
