History and context

Six horsemen and six infantrymen traverse the frieze with spears, falcatas and shields. The composition takes advantage of the curved surface: the narrative has no single front and obliges the viewer to turn the vase or walk around it.

We do not know if it represents a battle, a parade, a rite or a concrete heroic story. Yes, we know that the weapons and clothing were selected so that the audience could recognise positions and actions. The ceramic was a high-level narrative medium.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: the frieze, its figures and their armament can be described precisely from the conserved piece. Interpretation and caution: turning it into a chronicle of a real combat or a portrait of identifiable individuals exceeds the evidence.

The name of the piece also has a history

The excavation diary of 19 August 1934 records the first fragments and an immediate comparison with the warriors of Mycenae. The museum's monograph follows how that impression and the designation Combat of the Warriors with Cuirass were shaping its reception. A modern title can orient the gaze towards a battle before examining the frieze. For this reason, it is advisable to preserve the history of the discovery without confusing the excavator's comparison with a direct connection between both vessels, separated by distinct contexts and chronologies.
