History and context

The large ceremonial vase contains a complex sequence: an aulos player, a combatant facing a beast, horsemen pursuing a stag and two warriors with different panoplies. The surface obliges turning the piece and converts narrative time into movement.

We do not know whether the ancient public recognised a myth, an initiation, an aristocratic memory or several linked scenes. The motifs are describable; their lost argument must not be replaced by a fable presented as translation.

The halt also reconstructs the painter: choosing the order of the figures was an intellectual and technical decision, not mere ornament.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: discovery at La Serreta, figurative composition and repertoire of weapons, animals and instrument. Interpretation and caution: narrative order, protagonists and ritual meaning are not preserved in writing.

The room that accompanied the images

The vase formed part of the assemblage of room F1 at La Serreta, excavated in 1956. There also appeared Campanian A ware, a Hellenistic lamp, a goldsmith’s matrix and a written lead. A terracotta plaque showed a figure nursing two creatures, accompanied by women, children and music. The association of these objects allowed proposing a cultual function for the space. However, the old documentation is scarce: it does not record altars or benches, and the room formally resembles other domestic rooms, although it is larger.
