History and context

At the top, Ur-Nanshe carries a basket on her head. Below he participates in a banquet scene. The relief brings together construction and celebration around the ruler, accompanied by figures whose names were inscribed on the stone.

The fact that a king appears carrying materials does not turn the scene into an ordinary day of work. The image presents a public and religious responsibility. He also remembers that building depended on many people, although the monument gave the ruler the greatest prominence.

Evidence and interpretation

The Louvre catalog preserves two different chronological approaches for the piece; For this reason, an exact date is avoided. Part of the family relationships between the figures remains disputed.

Writing enters the scene

The names of several characters were engraved on their own clothing: writing and image thus share the same space. In the lower scene, the king holds a cup and a servant appears with a container. These details allow you to observe how the banquet is organized without turning it into a complete description of a real meal. The catalog proposes relationships for companions with different degrees of certainty; a named figure does not equate to a fully resolved genealogy.
