The decoration also conducts the liquid

The body of the amphora does not end in a closed surface: it incorporates three spouts, two in the form of lion’s heads and another of a winged horse. Above, pairs of birds among flowers and palmettes give way to scenes of horse handling, while an upper frieze presents griffins attacking a stag. The study of E. E. Kuzmina distinguishes these registers before discussing their meaning. This distribution obliges one to traverse the vessel vertically: fantastic animals, human actions and vegetal ornamentation occupy distinct zones of a piece that integrates figuration and drink service.
