History and context

Island-peninsula connection: It is presented as a peninsular and insular connection, not as a piece of a continental Iberian culture.

The same piece also appears in the Punic-Ebusitan tradition. Duplicating the record does not duplicate authorship: it allows reading manufacture, use, deposit and discovery from both routes.

Evidence and interpretation

Punic-Ebusitan tradition [documented]: The terracotta belongs to workshops and Punic contexts of Ibiza; Tanit is a possible interpretation. Island-peninsula connection [documented]: It is presented as a peninsular and insular connection, not as a piece of a continental Iberian culture.

A Gorgon among flowers

On the tunic appears a Gorgon's head surrounded by four rosettes of thirteen petals. It has wavy hair, marked pupils and an open mouth showing the upper teeth: the museum highlights a less fierce expression than that of other Greek Gorgons. The dress combines this creature of the mythical imagination with palmettes, volutes and floral motifs. The rosettes reappear in the headdress, the side ornaments and the sandals, while three necklaces order the neck and chest. The repertoire allows observing how a Punic-Ebusitan workshop brought together diverse elements into a coherent image.
