History and context

A Knossos tablet in Linear B records oil deliveries to religious personnel and deities. The clay was a temporary archival medium; the fire that baked many tablets ensured their survival.

The key is the transition: Linear B derives from an earlier Aegean tradition, but records an early form of Greek, unlike the still-undeciphered Linear A.

Tablet Fp 13 records oil for religious personnel and deities. Its 15.5 cm preserves an administrative transaction, not a hymn.

The clay was probably a short-term archival medium; the fire that destroyed the archive baked it. It survived precisely because the system that used it failed.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: The British Museum catalogues a Knossos tablet of c. 1375 BCE with oil offerings in Linear B. Interpretation and caution: The text reflects a palace office; it does not by itself describe the religion or economy of all Creta. Documented expansion: The British Museum dates the tablet to c. 1375 BCE, places it at Knossos and translates its record of offerings. Expanded interpretation and caution: It reflects an office and a moment; it does not quantify total production nor describe the complete religion of Creta.

Follow a topic across the collections. A shared tag is a way to compare objects, not proof that one culture influenced another.

The order uses the midpoint of each approximate date range; ranges can overlap. Spacing does not represent elapsed time. Swipe, scroll or use the arrows. With the sequence focused, use ← / →, Home or End.

The recipient is a priestess

The third line of Fp 13 contains twice the sequence a-ne-mo-i-je-re-ja, interpreted as ‘to the priestess of the winds’. Roland Hampe noted that it appears without an internal separator and with a termination identifying a singular female recipient. Comparison with Fp 1 is instructive: there the components appear separated graphically. This variation does not prevent recognising the same religious function. The two deliveries of Fp 13 have been linked to different places, but that localisation is an interpretation. The text allows recognition of a female cultic office without inventing the name or biography of its holder.
