History and context

In a cave in the Maros-Pangkep karst, a large Sulawesi pig appears alongside three human-like figures. The relationship between them appears intentional: it is not merely an inventory of animals, but a scene that researchers interpret as shared action.

A calcite crust formed over the pigment provided a minimum age of 51,200 years. The find made it impossible to continue counting the birth of figurative narrative as an exclusively European story. The Sulawesi wall had been contradicting that mental map for tens of millennia.

Evidence and interpretation

The dating measures overlying calcite, not the pigment: the work is at least as old as the crust, perhaps older. The scientific image is composed as a panorama and enhanced with DStretch to make highly deteriorated strokes legible; it does not reproduce the bare chromatic appearance of the wall.

Follow a topic across the collections. A shared tag is a way to compare objects, not proof that one culture influenced another.

The order uses the midpoint of each approximate date range; ranges can overlap. Spacing does not represent elapsed time. Swipe, scroll or use the arrows. With the sequence focused, use ← / →, Home or End.

THE CURRENT OBJECT

Its date is not sufficiently established to place it on the timeline. We keep it here, separate from the dated objects.

The laser examines the crust, not the moment of painting

The 2024 study used laser ablation imaging of uranium series to investigate mineral deposits associated with the painting. The minimum age of 51,200 years is understood in that relationship between image and covering, not as the reading of a date inscribed by its authors. The composition of human figures and a pig suggests an interaction; recognising a scene does not allow us to recover their words or know whether it represented an event, a teaching or an imagined tale. Dating technique and narrative interpretation answer different questions.
