Declared visual reconstruction, created for museographic contextualisation; not a photograph of the original nor does it constitute documentary evidence.
History and context
In 2012 a street in Ullastret yielded fifteen cranial fragments, including two skulls pierced by iron nails. Other finds from the northeast combine human remains, unusable weapons and visible settlement spaces.
The practice relates to the display of defeated enemies described by classical authors for Gaulish peoples, but the literary parallel does not substitute for context. The individuals had concrete ages and biographies that are not reduced to the label of 'Celtic trophy'.
Nailing and displaying transformed a death into warning, humiliation or collective memory; we do not know what term the community used nor how long the exposure lasted.
Evidence and interpretation
Documented fact: cranial remains, nails, urban context and anthropological analyses. Interpretation and caution: ethnic identity of the defeated, exact ritual and political meaning cannot be universalised from ancient texts.

Dental enamel adds a geographical biography
The 2025 study measured strontium and oxygen in the teeth of seven individuals from Ullastret and Puig Castellar. To interpret the results, sediments, vegetation and fauna from the surroundings were also compared. Two individuals from Ullastret showed values compatible with local origin and were found in an interior street. This complicates the automatic identification of all heads as foreign enemies. Isotopes allow contrasting mobility with an environmental reference; they do not provide names, loyalties or the exact reason for each death.
