An Assyrian consultation on a possible marriage

The tablet SAA 4, 20 preserves a question directed to the god Šamaš. Esarhaddon wants to know whether Bartatua, called king of the Scythians, will fulfil an agreement and speak of peace sincerely if he receives a royal daughter in marriage. The text mentions envoys sent by Bartatua, so it allows recognition of diplomatic negotiation, intermediaries and concern for loyalty. Its interrogative form matters: it records a decision under consideration, not a marriage record. It also does not give the princess's name; attributing one to her would require independent evidence.
