The tiny connections behind the gold

The technological study published in 2024 identifies small lugs of folded and soldered sheet behind the animals from Arzhan 2. They served to attach the metal to textiles or other organic supports. It also recognises solder residue with copper, added to make the joint melt before the main pieces. The uniform surfaces of some sheets had suggested the use of rollers; Armbruster and Meyer instead attribute them to the skill of those who hammered the gold. Observing the reverse reveals technical decisions that the frontal image of the animal usually conceals.
