A work could unite stone, metal and inlay

Ceremonial jade weapons with bronze mountings show that decoration did not end when the mould was opened. The Smithsonian catalogue studies composite pieces and channels prepared to receive turquoise inlays once the metal was cast. The final surface thus brought together work requiring different skills: stone carving and polishing, casting and the setting of small inlays. Considering only the weapon's silhouette obscures this material collaboration. The result belonged to the realm of ceremonial representation and should not automatically be understood as an ordinary combat tool.
