What Survived Was Not All That Was Written

Bones and bronzes preserve writing because their supports resisted much better than wood and bamboo. The Anyang exhibition at the Smithsonian situates these perishable materials on the horizon of a already developed writing culture. The archive we read today is, therefore, a selection conditioned by matter: it does not equal the body of messages that circulated in the city. This contrast helps us to value ritual texts without turning their archaeological abundance into proof that writing served only to consult ancestors.
