Buildings that replace other buildings

The sequence of the Erlitou palace enclosure allows us to follow transformations in design. At one stage, buildings 3 and 5 appear side by side, and a drainage system with wooden structures; building 3 included three courtyards. Later, building 3 was replaced by the complexes 2 and 4, arranged on a north-south axis. The plan usually reproduced to explain Erlitou compresses these phases. Reading them separately reveals a built space that was constructed and reorganised, not a single project completed all at once.
