How to date a rammed-earth wall

The stratigraphic position of Zhengzhou's wall offers evidence distinct from its size. The study published in Early China places it after deposits from the end of Erlitou and before those corresponding to lower Erligang. This relationship allows the construction to be ordered within an archaeological sequence without needing an inscription bearing a king's name. The wells, ditches, dwellings and workshops recognised on both sides also provide contexts for studying its uses: the wall was part of an occupied landscape, not an isolated structure.
