Three tonnes beneath the city floor

In 2015 a circular pit was identified northwest of Liujiazhuang containing 293 lead ingots with a combined weight of 3,404 kilograms. The report describes shell-like forms and highly variable sizes. This deposit adds a little-visible infrastructure to the Anyang landscape: the storage of raw material for a metallurgy that incorporated lead into its alloys. The concentration allows investigation of how materials were reserved and managed; by itself it does not identify the owner or the specific institution controlling the deposit.
