A sign changes direction when printed

Rao recalls a fundamental distinction: the orientation seen in a matrix is inverted in its impression. Indus sequences are usually read from right to left in the impressions, so the seal shows the opposite arrangement. Recognising this relation allows comparing objects of different manufacture without mixing them in the same orientation. It is an analytical operation prior to decipherment: we can study positions, repetitions and groups of signs although we still do not know the sound or meaning that corresponded to them.
