History and context

The small figure shows a high-ranking horseman or warrior with a large-crested helmet, falcata, and shield. The orifice and the shape of its base allow the suggestion that it belonged to a standard and was cut or transformed before being deposited as an ex-voto.

La Bastida was a walled city of the 4th century BCE occupied for only a few generations and abandoned after a destructive episode. The object allows us to tell of a community that seemed stable without turning its end into a known fate for its inhabitants.

Following the biography of the bronze — manufacture, public use, transformation, and deposition — shows that an object does not retain a single meaning.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: equestrian iconography, context of La Bastida, and material modification of the support. Interpretation and caution: original function as a standard and reason for its conversion into an ex-voto remain proposals.

A horseman appeared within a domestic space

The publication of the Museum of Prehistory situates the find in department 218 of La Bastida de les Alcusses. This domestic context prevents imagining more readily that it appeared in a major sanctuary. The figure represents the naked horseman and highlights helmet, shield, and falcata: it selects the signs of his condition, not a complete inventory of everyday clothing. The possible initial function as a finial on a staff is studied by comparison with other objects. Its eventual final use as an offering remains a proposal; findspot and original function are not necessarily the same.
