Three surviving rules from a set of eight

The so-called Eight Prohibitions are only partially known: news survives of three provisions, not a complete code excavated. A synthesis of the National Institute of Korean History collects that injuries were compensated with grain and that theft could lead to the enslavement of the perpetrator for the benefit of the victim. The monetary alternative indicated was an extraordinarily high fine. These fragments allow investigation of property, dependence and punishment in the society described by the sources. They also show that a written history of Gojoseon can treat social relations, besides dynastic successions and wars.
