Reconstruction also allows testing

The Deskford carnyx preserves a bell of bronze and brass sheets in the shape of a boar. In 1992 a project began to fabricate a playable version, bringing together archaeological research and craftsmanship. The reconstruction catalogued by National Museums Scotland incorporates a wooden tongue and enamel eyes. Its existence allows exploration of the relationship between form, materials and sound. Listening to it is experimenting with a modern proposal based on the find; it does not equate to recovering an ancient melody or a concrete performance by its users.
