History and context
Long before the Odrysian kings, farming communities in the Balkans raised and rebuilt their homes. At Karanovo, the accumulation of these occupations formed a mound several metres high: each stratum preserves a stage of life and helps order regional prehistory.
The Varna Necropolis, from the 5th millennium BCE, shows another transformation: the working of copper and gold and an uneven distribution of funerary objects. These are antecedents in the territory later inhabited by Thracian peoples; calling those inhabitants Thracian would project a historical identity thousands of years backwards.
Evidence and interpretation
Prehistoric archaeological cultures: not names of known peoples, languages or kings. The wealth of a grave admits interpretations of prestige; it does not by itself provide a title such as king or priest.

Reading a village by layers
Karanovo allows comparison of ceramics and other materials from successive levels. Its sequence became a reference for synchronising sites in southeastern Europe. An settlement mound results from accumulated occupations; it should not be confused with a burial mound built to cover a grave.

Varna: the objects and their differences
At Varna appeared graves with gold, copper, stone tools and shell ornaments. The variety allows the study of techniques and exchanges. The inequality of the assemblages opens questions about the position of the people and the decisions of those who buried them.

Shared territory, distinct identities
The chronology of the Varna gold lies approximately between 4600 and 4200 BCE. That distance from the Odrysian kingdom of the 5th century BCE is essential: material similarities do not prove uninterrupted ethnic continuity.
