The surviving stone supported wood now lost

A double-bull capital from the south portico of the Apadana preserves a clue to its function: the space between the animals received a wooden beam, probably a lintel. The Chicago catalogue distinguishes this piece from the reconstructed aspect with which the column is presented today. The structure combined materials that survive unevenly; the stone parts are not an intact building without a roof. To imagine the hall, it is indispensable to restore to the composition its joints and wooden elements, without confusing this restitution with still-visible remains.
