A biography that still retains colour

The stela of Ataqelula, an elite woman from Sedeinga in the second century CE, preserves information about her family relations. The CNRS additionally documents blue lines identified chemically as Egyptian blue. The funerary text was therefore a worked and coloured surface, not merely a sequence of incised signs. Its study combines language, genealogy, archaeology, and pigment analysis. These concrete advances show why 'partially understood language' does not mean that all Meroitic inscriptions are equally opaque or lack personal information.
