Metal Preserved the Imprint of Vegetal Craftsmanship
At La Bastida de les Alcusses, lead droplets with impressions of braided esparto were recovered. The study of the Valencian collections of 2024 uses these impressions alongside charred remains to investigate vegetal objects that normally disappear. Craftsmanship is not reduced to what survives intact: a material can preserve the form of another. The impression documents contact during a metalworking process, but does not by itself identify the complete function of the braided object nor the person who made it.
