History and context
The sequence at Zinchecra documents occupation at height, light structures, hearths and later phases with mudbrick.
It was not a finished Garamantian city from the outset; the stratigraphy shows how a place changed before maximum urbanisation.
The excavations distinguish rock-cut houses, stone and frond shelters and, later, more complex mudbrick constructions. This sequence prevents drawing a finished fortress from the 9th century BCE.
Zinchecra was abandoned as a settlement and reused for burials. The change of function is known archaeologically; its political decisions were not written down.
Evidence and interpretation
Phases, materials and settlement are excavated. Early name, rank and political organisation are unknown.

The base of the house also changed
The report on the 1965–1967 excavations identifies late structures at Zinchecra that used worked stone in the lower courses of mudbrick houses. Some are placed in the 1st century BCE. The observation allows a specific technical decision to be traced: different materials made up different parts of the building. Within the same broad phase, carefully constructed buildings coexisted with simpler shelters. The variety of solutions within the settlement matters as much as its elevated position and allows domestic transformations to be investigated without reducing the entire occupation to a single uniform fortress.
