History and context
Saniat Jibril preserved hearths, slag, moulds, local objects and imports within excavated phases.
Each material must return to its stratum and association. Grouping it under an industrial label would erase dwelling, repair and temporal change.
Volume 3 of The Archaeology of Fazzan publishes the excavation of Saniat Jibril with its stratigraphic associations. Hearths, slag, moulds, glass and pottery belong to different activities and phases.
The term workshop is useful only where installation and waste coincide. An imported object or isolated slag does not demonstrate large-scale specialisation.
Evidence and interpretation
Installations, waste and materials are excavated. Scale of specialisation and political control are not uniform.

Working metal does not mean extracting it
A research programme on Saharan copper studied material from Saniat Jibril and Old Jarma, including fragments of sheet metal, ornaments, ingot moulds and hearth residues. Its authors distinguished metalworking, documented at those places, from extracting metal from ores, for which evidence was then lacking. Chemical and isotopic measurements were intended to investigate origins and possible recycling. This distinction allows the workshop to be understood as a link in a technical and commercial chain, without attributing all of its operations to it.
