History and context

Old Jarma, foggaras and cemeteries continued to have stories after the transformation of political power. Some infrastructures were abandoned; others were reused or remained inscribed in later landscapes.

Hydrological change, trade and politics interacted. No single variable explains a closed and uniform end by itself.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: Urban, hydraulic and funerary sequences span Garamantian and later phases and allow studying continuity and abandonment separately. Interpretation and caution: Do not narrate an instant collapse caused solely by water exhaustion, the fall of Rome or the arrival of the camel; nor identify present-day populations without mediation.

An oasis city after the Garamantes

Zuwila offers a concrete case of regional transformation. Research distinguishes a Garamantian settlement and early Islamic period settlement, with mudbrick buildings around a probable late fortified enclosure and an early congregational mosque, from the later walled city. The latter retained defences of rammed earth whose technique stands out within the Fezzan. Following these phases allows observing changes in construction, religious space and urban organisation. The end of a political formation did not automatically empty the oases: places continued to be used and acquired new functions in later networks.
