What seemed a defect could help conserve the material

A study published in 2023 examined the white lime inclusions in Roman concrete from Privernum. Analyses linked them to mixes prepared at high temperature, not simply to careless execution. Tests with materials inspired by that technique showed capacity to seal small cracks through calcium reactions. The finding allows observing construction also at the microscopic scale. It does not mean that all Roman concrete had an identical recipe or that any damage was self-repairing: the study identifies a concrete mechanism and its experimental conditions.
