Practice on a grid

The ostracon S. 6389 from the Museo Egizio introduces the material practice of learning. It is a fragment of limestone written on both sides, with hieroglyphic signs organized in a grid; the museum interprets it, with caution, as a probable school exercise. It comes from Deir el-Medina, was excavated in 1905 and dates back to the 19th–20th dynasties. The order of the surface allows us to observe a script rehearsed in units, not only a finished ceremonial text. Its context of discovery and the organization of the signs support the educational interpretation without revealing the identity or age of the writer.
