History and context

Salt preserved textiles, leather and organic remains that return the physical scale of work. At Hochdorf and Vix, vessels, horns, wagons and furniture transformed drinking and mobility practices into funerary ceremonies.

Lindow Man preserves a trimmed beard, manicured nails and his last meal, an unleavened cake. It is an exceptional bodily biography, not a statistical portrait of the British population.

Evidence and interpretation

Documented fact: The British Museum records approximate age, height, personal care and stomach contents of Lindow Man; Hallstatt preserves everyday materials in the mines. Interpretation and caution: A last meal does not define an annual diet and a funerary banquet does not reproduce an everyday meal.

Evidence of fermentation in human remains

The analysis of palaeofeces from Hallstatt published in Current Biology identified, in an Iron Age sample, the fungi Penicillium roqueforti and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors interpret their genomic characteristics as evidence of consumption of matured cheese and beer. The interest lies in the process: transforming milk and cereals through fermentation produces foods different from the initial raw materials. Cheese maturation could have facilitated storage and reduced lactose. It is a concrete window into complex food knowledge among those working in the mine.
